Laparoscopic Surgery

What is Laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopy also popularly known as “Keyhole surgery” is a procedure that allows visual examination of the abdominal cavity with the help of an optical instrument called a laparoscope, which is inserted through a small incision made in the abdominal wall. The term comes from the Greek words “laparo” means flank and “skopein” means to examine.

How does it work?

The laparoscope is a type of device similar to a small microscope that is equipped with a light source. It is fitted with fiber-optic lights and small video that allow a surgical team to view the abdominal tissues and organs on a monitor in the operating room. A laparoscope is a diagnostic tool that also makes it possible for surgeons to perform some types of surgery through the same incision. Keyhole surgery is carried out under general anesthesia which means there will be neither pain nor recollection of the procedure.

Chaitanya Hospital offers advanced laparoscopic surgeries in treating the following conditions:

  • Hernia
  • Gall bladder
  • Appendectomy
  • Piles
  • Fissure
  • Hysterectomy

  • Colon Conditions
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Gastrointestinal malignancies
  • Some tumors
  • Achalasia
  • Groin pain

  • Diverticulitis

Benefits of Laparoscopy Surgery

Today, this technique is not only used to obtain diagnostic information but also employed in a variety of surgeries including removal of the gall bladder(cholecystectomy) appendectomy, hysterectomy, repair of hernias, and removal of tumors among others. Because it is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, it requires a much smaller incision than traditional surgery does; causing less damage to tissues, nerves, muscles, and skin. In a few cases, it can be performed with only local anesthesia and a mild sedative.
